National Highways Development
Full Form of NHD
What is NHD?
National Highways Development (NHD) commonly refers to India's flagship infrastructure initiative, the National Highways Development Project (NHDP), launched in 2000 by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. It is the largest highway project in India, aimed at upgrading and expanding the national highway network to world-class standards. The project is implemented by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and covers multiple phases, including the Golden Quadrilateral connecting four major metros, the North-South and East-West corridors, and other expressways and port connectivity roads. NHD has transformed road transportation in India, reducing travel time, improving safety, and boosting economic growth by facilitating faster movement of goods and people. The project is highly relevant for competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and state PSCs, where questions on infrastructure schemes and their phases frequently appear. NHAI uses a mix of public funding, toll revenue, and public-private partnerships to execute NHD. The initiative has significantly enhanced India's logistics efficiency and is a cornerstone of the government's 'Bharatmala Pariyojana' program. Understanding NHD is crucial for students of civil engineering, economics, and public administration.
