Non-Gonococcal Urethritis
Full Form of NGU
What is NGU?
Non-Gonococcal Urethritis (NGU) is a medical condition characterized by inflammation of the urethra that is not caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. In India, NGU is a common diagnosis in sexually transmitted infection (STI) clinics, often resulting from Chlamydia trachomatis, Mycoplasma genitalium, or Ureaplasma urealyticum. It presents with symptoms such as discharge, dysuria, and itching, though many cases are asymptomatic. NGU is diagnosed through urine tests, urethral swabs, and nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs). Treatment typically involves antibiotics like azithromycin or doxycycline, and partner notification is crucial to prevent reinfection. The condition is particularly relevant in Indian public health settings due to underreporting and stigma around STIs. For medical students and professionals, understanding NGU is essential for differential diagnosis of urethritis and for preparing for exams like NEET PG, AIIMS, and USMLE. Awareness campaigns and screening programs in India aim to reduce the burden of NGU and its complications, including pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility.
