National Green Tribunal Act
Full Form of NGTA
What is NGTA?
The National Green Tribunal Act, commonly abbreviated as NGTA, is an important piece of environmental legislation enacted by the Indian Parliament in 2010. The law was passed to establish the National Green Tribunal (NGT) for the effective and speedy disposal of cases relating to environmental protection, conservation of forests and natural resources, and enforcement of any legal right relating to the environment. Under this Act, the Tribunal has been given the power to handle civil cases where substantial questions regarding the environment arise, offering relief and compensation to victims of pollution or environmental damage. The NGTA applies across all states and union territories of India and plays a vital role in adjudicating disputes involving industrial pollution, deforestation, illegal mining, and violations of environmental clearances. For students preparing for UPSC, judiciary, and law entrance examinations, understanding the provisions of this Act and the jurisdiction of the NGT is essential, as questions frequently appear in general studies, environmental law, and current affairs sections.
