National Green Tribunal
Full Form of NGJ
What is NGJ?
The National Green Tribunal (NGJ) is a specialized judicial body in India established under the National Green Tribunal Act, 2010. It is tasked with the effective and expeditious disposal of cases relating to environmental protection, conservation of natural resources, and enforcement of environmental rights. The tribunal operates at the national level with its principal bench in New Delhi and regional benches in Bhopal, Pune, Kolkata, and Chennai. It hears appeals and original applications filed by individuals, communities, or organizations against projects or activities that may harm the environment, such as industrial pollution, deforestation, or illegal mining. The NGJ follows principles of natural justice and is not bound by the Code of Civil Procedure, making it a faster alternative to traditional courts. Its decisions can be challenged only in the Supreme Court. For students and professionals preparing for exams like UPSC, state civil services, and law entrance tests, understanding the NGJ's role, jurisdiction, and landmark judgments is crucial. The tribunal has delivered key verdicts on issues like the ban on plastic waste, river conservation, and air pollution control measures, shaping India's environmental jurisprudence.
