National Green Highway
Full Form of NGH
What is NGH?
National Green Highway (NGH) refers to a flagship initiative by the Government of India, primarily implemented by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Launched as part of the Green Highways (Plantation, Transplantation, Beautification & Maintenance) Policy in 2015, the NGH program aims to develop eco-friendly and sustainable national highway corridors across the country. It involves large-scale plantation of native tree species along highway stretches, installation of drip irrigation systems, and adoption of green technologies to reduce carbon footprint. The initiative also focuses on creating green cover to prevent soil erosion, improve air quality, and provide shade to road users. NGH is actively used in project documentation, tenders, and monitoring reports by NHAI and state public works departments. For civil engineering and environmental science students appearing for UPSC, GATE, or state PSC exams, understanding NGH is vital as questions on sustainable infrastructure and government environmental policies frequently appear. The program has set targets for planting millions of saplings along thousands of kilometres of national highways, making it a key element in India’s climate mitigation strategy.
