What is NGA?

The National Gaur Association (NGA) is an Indian non-profit organisation dedicated to the conservation and protection of the Indian gaur (Bos gaurus), also known as the Indian bison, which is the largest extant bovine species and a flagship animal of India’s forests. The NGA works collaboratively with state forest departments, wildlife institutes, and local communities to monitor gaur populations, combat poaching and habitat fragmentation, and implement scientific management practices. The association was established to address the growing threats to gaur habitats due to deforestation, encroachment, and human-wildlife conflict. Its activities include conducting field surveys, organising awareness programmes for villagers, and advocating for better legal protection under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
