Full Form of NFR
What is NFR?
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is one of the 18 railway zones of Indian Railways, responsible for managing rail operations across the northeastern states of India, including Assam, West Bengal (northern part), Bihar (a small section), Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Meghalaya. Established in 1958, its headquarters is located in Maligaon, Guwahati, Assam. NFR plays a pivotal role in connecting the strategically important and geographically challenging northeastern region with the rest of the country. It oversees a network of over 4,000 route kilometers, comprising both broad gauge and metre gauge lines, and is actively involved in gauge conversion and new line projects to improve connectivity. The zone also operates important international freight and passenger services to Bangladesh via the integrated check posts at Petrapole and Gede. For students appearing in competitive exams like UPSC or RRB, NFR is frequently referenced in questions related to Indian Railways zones, their headquarters, and the socio-economic development of the Northeast. Understanding NFR’s role helps comprehend India’s efforts in integrating its northeastern states through rail infrastructure.
