What is NDN?
The National Data Network (NDN) is a centralized digital infrastructure initiative by the Government of India, designed to facilitate seamless and secure data sharing among various government departments, ministries, and agencies. As part of the broader Digital India vision, the NDN aims to break down data silos, improve inter-departmental coordination, and enhance the efficiency of public service delivery. It provides a common platform for data exchange using standardized protocols, ensuring interoperability, privacy, and security. The NDN is utilized in e-governance projects, policy planning, welfare scheme implementation, and real-time monitoring of national programs. It was formally proposed under the National Data Governance Framework Policy to promote data-driven decision-making and innovation. For students preparing for competitive exams like UPSC, State PSCs, and banking exams, understanding the NDN is relevant under the topics of digital governance, e-governance initiatives, and data management policies. The network supports initiatives such as Aarogya Setu, DigiLocker, and UMANG by enabling backend data integration. It also plays a crucial role in implementing the Data Empowerment and Protection Architecture (DEPA). The NDN is governed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and is expected to spur job creation in data analytics, cybersecurity, and public administration.
