National Biodiversity Fund
Full Form of NBF
What is NBF?
The National Biodiversity Fund (NBF) is a dedicated financial mechanism established under Section 27 of India's Biological Diversity Act, 2002. It is administered by the National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) to support the conservation and sustainable use of biological resources, as well as the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from their utilization. The fund receives contributions from the central government, fees collected from foreign and domestic applicants seeking access to biological resources, and grants or donations. It is primarily used to implement biodiversity management plans, promote research, create awareness programs, and compensate local communities for their traditional knowledge. The NBF operates at the national level, while states maintain similar State Biodiversity Funds. This fund is crucial for India's compliance with the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Nagoya Protocol. For competitive exams like UPSC, state civil services, and environmental science papers, the NBF is a key topic under Indian biodiversity governance, often appearing in questions about legal frameworks and conservation finance.
