What is N95?
N95 refers to a standard of respiratory protective equipment defined by the US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The 'N' stands for 'Not resistant to oil', and '95' indicates that the mask filters at least 95% of airborne particles measuring 0.3 microns in diameter. In India, N95 masks gained widespread prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic, becoming essential personal protective equipment (PPE) for healthcare workers and frontline staff. They are commonly used in hospitals, clinics, and high-risk environments to protect against infectious droplets and aerosols. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has also established equivalent standards (IS 16289) for such masks. N95 masks are frequently mentioned in medical and paramedical entrance exams like NEET PG and nursing exams, where candidates must understand their filtration efficiency, appropriate usage, and limitations.
