Minimum Wage Policy
Full Form of MWP
What is MWP?
The Minimum Wage Policy (MWP) refers to the statutory framework that sets the lowest remuneration employers can legally pay their workers. In India, the policy is primarily governed by the Minimum Wages Act, 1948, which empowers central and state governments to fix minimum wage rates for scheduled employments such as agriculture, construction, and factories. The MWP ensures a basic standard of living for workers by covering aspects like basic wage, dearness allowance, and overtime. It is a critical tool for labour welfare, reducing exploitation, and promoting fair competition among businesses. Implementation involves periodic revisions based on inflation, cost of living index, and expert committee recommendations. The policy is applied across both organized and unorganized sectors, although enforcement challenges persist. For government exams like UPSC and SSC, the MWP is a key topic under labour laws and social justice, often linked with concepts like living wage and wage inequality. Understanding its constitutional basis (Article 39) and recent reforms such as the Code on Wages, 2019 is essential. The MWP directly impacts millions of daily wage earners and is a benchmark for other social security schemes like PMMY and ESI.
