Multiple Virtual Storage
Full Form of MVS
What is MVS?
Multiple Virtual Storage (MVS) is an IBM mainframe operating system that was introduced in the 1970s and became the foundation for modern z/OS systems. It manages multiple virtual storage spaces, allowing mainframe computers to run several applications concurrently with high reliability and security. In India, MVS has been widely used by large enterprises such as banks, insurance companies, and government departments (e.g., State Bank of India, Indian Railways) for mission-critical batch processing and transaction handling. Although newer systems have evolved, MVS still runs in legacy environments and is studied in computer science curricula to understand mainframe concepts. For GATE and other competitive exams, questions on MVS may cover memory management, job control language (JCL), and differences with newer operating systems. Understanding MVS remains valuable for careers in core banking systems and IT infrastructure management in India.
