Multi-User Gateway
Full Form of MUG
What is MUG?
A Multi-User Gateway (MUG) is a networking device or software that allows multiple users to connect to a common external network, such as the internet, through a single interface. In India, MUGs are widely deployed by telecom operators like BSNL and Airtel in rural and urban broadband setups, enabling shared access in cyber cafes, educational institutions, and small offices. They manage traffic, provide basic security through NAT, and reduce the need for multiple public IP addresses. MUGs are also used in IoT hubs and community Wi-Fi projects under the Digital India initiative, supporting cost-effective connectivity. Understanding MUG concepts is relevant for candidates preparing for GATE, NIELIT, and networking certifications like CCNA, as they form the foundation of access network design.
