Machine Readable Zone
Full Form of MRZ
What is MRZ?
The Machine Readable Zone (MRZ) is a standardized section of text printed on travel documents such as passports, visas, and identity cards. It consists of two or three lines of alphanumeric characters designed to be read quickly by optical scanners, enabling automated data capture at immigration checkpoints. In India, the MRZ is prominently featured on the data page of all e-passports and ordinary passports issued by the Ministry of External Affairs. It encodes key personal details including the holder’s name, passport number, nationality, date of birth, sex, and document expiry date, following the specifications set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The MRZ facilitates faster processing at airports and land borders, reducing queues and human error. Automated e-Gates installed at major Indian international airports rely on MRZ scanning for self-service immigration clearance. Although the MRZ itself does not appear in standard competitive exam syllabi, understanding its role in modern travel security can be useful for questions on passport features or immigration procedures in exams like UPSC Civil Services or SSC CHSL. The MRZ is also present on visa stickers affixed by Indian embassies, making it a common feature for both Indian citizens and foreign nationals entering the country.
