Multi-Level Marketing
Full Form of MLM
What is MLM?
Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) is a business model in which independent distributors earn income not only from their own product sales but also from the sales of recruits they bring into the network. In India, MLM operates under the regulatory framework of the Direct Selling Guidelines (2016) and the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, aiming to distinguish legitimate direct selling from illegal pyramid schemes. MLM companies typically offer health supplements, cosmetics, or lifestyle products, and distributors are incentivized to build a downline organization. The model is widely used in sectors like wellness, beauty, and home appliances, with prominent examples including Amway, Herbalife, and Vestige. However, MLM has attracted criticism due to its resemblance to pyramid schemes, leading to strict government scrutiny. In the Indian context, the Reserve Bank of India and state governments have issued warnings about fraudulent MLM schemes that promise unrealistic returns. For competitive exams like the UPSC or banking exams, questions often revolve around differentiating between legitimate MLM, which focuses on product sales, and illegal pyramid schemes that rely solely on recruitment fees. Understanding MLM is crucial for business students and entrepreneurs entering the direct selling industry in India.
