Mukhyamantri Kanya Yojana
Full Form of MKY
What is MKY?
Mukhyamantri Kanya Yojana (MKY) is a state-level flagship scheme implemented by several Indian state governments, most notably Bihar and Uttarakhand, aimed at empowering the girl child through financial assistance and educational support. The scheme provides a direct benefit transfer to the family of a newborn girl child, typically starting from birth and continuing until she reaches adulthood or completes higher secondary education. MKY also includes provisions for marriage assistance to prevent child marriage and promote financial independence. It is part of broader efforts to address gender inequality, improve sex ratio, and combat female foeticide in India. The scheme is operational across districts in participating states, with applications processed through local block offices and Anganwadi centres. For competitive exams like UPSC, state PCS, and banking, MKY is often cited as a key example of women-centric welfare initiatives under the social justice and empowerment sections. The scheme has gained prominence for its role in increasing school enrolment among girls and reducing dropout rates, making it a model for other states to replicate.
