Magnetohydrodynamics
Full Form of MHD
What is MHD?
Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) is the study of the magnetic properties and behaviour of electrically conducting fluids such as plasmas, liquid metals, and saltwater. It combines principles from fluid dynamics and electromagnetism to describe how magnetic fields influence the motion of conductive fluids and vice versa. In India, MHD has significant applications in fusion energy research, particularly at institutes like the Institute for Plasma Research (IPR) in Gandhinagar, where studies on plasma confinement and MHD instabilities are crucial for the ITER project. It is also used in metallurgical processes, such as electromagnetic stirring of molten metals, and in understanding geophysical and astrophysical phenomena. MHD theory is covered in advanced physics curricula at Indian universities and is part of the GATE and CSIR-NET syllabi for physics and engineering. Its principles are vital for designing efficient MHD power generators and pumps. The interdisciplinary nature of MHD makes it a challenging yet rewarding field for Indian researchers working at the frontier of energy and materials science.
