Mahila Gram Yojana
Full Form of MGY
What is MGY?
Mahila Gram Yojana (MGY) is a flagship rural development scheme launched by the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India, to empower women in villages through skill development, financial inclusion, and livelihood support. The programme focuses on forming self-help groups (SHGs) among rural women, providing them with microcredit, vocational training, and market linkages to help them start or expand small businesses. MGY is implemented in convergence with other schemes such as DAY-NRLM and PMAY, and is particularly active in States with low female workforce participation like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Rajasthan. The scheme is executed through district-level rural development agencies and block offices, with monitoring by panchayati raj institutions. Since its launch, MGY has benefited over 2.5 crore women by enabling them to access bank loans, start enterprises, and gain decision-making power within their households. For students preparing for competitive exams like UPSC, banking, and state PCS, understanding MGY is important because questions on women-centric schemes appear frequently in GS papers and interview rounds. The scheme also aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 5 on gender equality and has been highlighted in the Economic Survey as a successful model for poverty alleviation.
