Minor Forest Produce
Full Form of MFP
What is MFP?
Minor Forest Produce (MFP) refers to non-timber forest products (NTFPs) such as honey, gum, seeds, leaves, fruits, and medicinal plants collected by forest-dwelling communities, primarily tribal populations in India. The term gained prominence under the Government of India's MFP Scheme launched in 2013, which aims to provide a minimum support price (MSP) for these items to ensure fair remuneration and reduce distress sales. MFP is central to livelihood security and sustainable forest management, particularly in states like Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Jharkhand. The scheme is implemented by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs through the Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation (TRIFED), with state-level agencies managing procurement. In competitive exams like UPSC Civil Services, State PCS, and forestry services, questions often cover the MFP Scheme, its impact on tribal income, and its link to the Forest Rights Act (FRA). Understanding MFP is crucial for aspirants as it integrates concepts of rural economy, environmental conservation, and social justice.
