Monthly Economic Index
Full Form of MEI
What is MEI?
The Monthly Economic Index (MEI) is a macroeconomic indicator published by India's Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI). It provides a high-frequency snapshot of the country's economic activity by aggregating data from various sectors such as industry, services, agriculture, and taxation. The MEI is designed to complement traditional quarterly GDP estimates by offering a timelier gauge of economic momentum. It is widely used by policymakers, economists, and financial analysts to monitor short-term trends, forecast quarterly output, and formulate monetary and fiscal responses. The index is released around the second week of every month, covering the previous month's performance, and is expressed as a single percentage change over the corresponding period. In the Indian context, the MEI has gained prominence as a real-time tool for tracking economic recovery, especially during disruptions like demonetisation or pandemic lockdowns. For students preparing for competitive exams such as UPSC, RBI Grade B, or NABARD, understanding the MEI is valuable because it frequently appears in questions related to economic indicators, data sources, and recent policy developments. The index reflects the government's push toward evidence-based decision-making and statistical transparency.
