Medium Density Fibreboard
Full Form of MDF
What is MDF?
Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) is an engineered wood product made by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibres, combining them with wax and a resin binder, and forming panels under high temperature and pressure. In India, MDF is widely used in furniture manufacturing, cabinetry, decorative wall panels, and flooring due to its smooth surface, uniformity, and resistance to warping compared to natural wood. It is particularly popular in urban furniture workshops and modular kitchen industries where precision cutting and painting are required. MDF is available in various thicknesses and densities, with standard sheets ranging from 6 mm to 25 mm. The material is also used for soundproofing and insulation in commercial spaces. In Indian competitive exams for civil engineering or interior design, questions on material properties of MDF occasionally appear. Its affordability and ease of machining make it a preferred choice over plywood for many indoor applications, though it is less moisture-resistant and heavier than solid wood. Understanding MDF helps students and professionals evaluate sustainable alternatives in construction and design sectors.
