Multilateral Development Bank
Full Form of MDB
What is MDB?
A Multilateral Development Bank (MDB) is an international financial institution established by multiple sovereign countries to provide financial assistance, loans, grants, and technical expertise for development projects in emerging and developing economies. MDBs operate with a mandate to reduce poverty, promote sustainable economic growth, and address cross-border challenges such as climate change, infrastructure gaps, and healthcare access. In India, prominent MDBs include the World Bank (IBRD and IDA), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the New Development Bank (NDB), and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). These institutions fund large-scale projects in sectors such as transportation, energy, water supply, sanitation, digital connectivity, and skill development. They work closely with central and state government agencies, offering concessional loans and policy advice. References to MDBs appear in budget documents, project appraisal reports, and economic surveys. For competitive exams like UPSC, RBI Grade B, and NABARD, candidates are often tested on the role, operations, and funding mechanisms of MDBs in the Indian context.
