Minimum Basic Wage
Full Form of MBW
What is MBW?
Minimum Basic Wage (MBW) refers to the lowest remuneration that an employer is legally obliged to pay to a worker per unit of time (hour, day, or month) in India. It is a key component of the statutory minimum wage framework established under the Minimum Wages Act, 1948. The MBW is set by both central and state governments for different scheduled employments, and it varies across regions, industries, and skill levels. This base wage typically excludes allowances like dearness allowance, overtime, or bonuses, though it may be supplemented by them. The concept ensures a subsistence level of income for unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled workers, thereby preventing exploitation and promoting fair labour practices. In India, MBW is prominently used in government contract work, factory employment, and agricultural labour agreements. Labour departments periodically revise the MBW based on cost of living indices and inflation trends. For competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and state PCS, questions on MBW appear in labour law and Indian economy sections. Understanding MBW is critical for aspirants and employers alike, as non-compliance can lead to legal penalties under the Labour Code on Wages, 2019.
