Mobile Banking Unit
Full Form of MBU
What is MBU?
A Mobile Banking Unit (MBU) is a specially equipped vehicle or portable setup that functions as a miniature bank branch, enabling customers in remote or underserved areas to access essential banking services. In India, MBUs are deployed by public and private sector banks, often under the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) financial inclusion initiatives, to serve regions without permanent bank branches. These units offer services like account opening, deposits, withdrawals, fund transfers, and government scheme enrollments. MBUs are particularly common in rural, hilly, and tribal areas, and play a vital role during natural disasters when fixed branches are inaccessible. The concept gained momentum after the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, which aimed to universalize banking. For competitive exams like IBPS, RBI Grade B, and NABARD, understanding MBUs is important under the topics of financial inclusion, banking infrastructure, and rural development. MBUs are also used by regional rural banks and cooperatives to meet regulatory norms of having banking outlets in every village. They operate using satellite or cellular networks and are often manned by two to three bank employees. The use of MBUs has expanded with increasing digitization, but they primarily cater to cash-based transactions.
