Lokmanya Zonal Institute
Full Form of LZI
What is LZI?
Lokmanya Zonal Institute (LZI) is a network of regional educational centers in India, primarily focused on vocational training and skill development for youth in underserved districts. Established under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship in collaboration with state governments, LZI offers short-term diploma and certificate courses in trades like electrical work, plumbing, digital literacy, and hospitality. These institutes are named after the freedom fighter Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak to inspire self-reliance and national pride. LZIs operate as zonal hubs, each catering to clusters of five to ten districts, thereby reducing the rural-urban skill gap. The curriculum is designed in partnership with industry bodies to ensure employability, and students receive placement assistance upon completion. LZIs have become particularly relevant in aspirational districts identified by NITI Aayog, contributing to the government's 'Skill India' mission. For competitive exams like SSC or state-level recruitment, questions on skill development initiatives often reference LZI as a key institution. The institute also runs outreach programs for women and marginalized communities, promoting inclusive growth. With over 200 centers operational as of 2024, LZI plays a vital role in transforming India's workforce.
