Licensed Vocational Nurse
Full Form of LVN
What is LVN?
A Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) is a healthcare professional trained to provide basic nursing care under the supervision of a registered nurse or physician. The term is widely used in the United States and some other countries, while in India, the closest equivalent is the Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) or General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) graduate. LVNs perform tasks such as taking vital signs, administering medications, wound care, and assisting with patient hygiene. In India, vocational nursing courses are offered by various private institutes and state medical boards, often as part of skill development programs under the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC). These courses typically last one to two years and include clinical training in hospitals and community health centers. The role of an LVN is crucial in addressing the shortage of skilled nursing staff, especially in rural and semi-urban areas. Although the specific designation 'LVN' is not officially recognized by the Indian Nursing Council, the skills and responsibilities overlap with those of nursing assistants and vocational nurses. For students preparing for medical entrance exams or nursing licensing exams, understanding the differences between LVN, LPN, RN, and other nursing tiers is important for career planning and job opportunities in both India and abroad.
