Left Ventricular Aneurysm
Full Form of LVA
What is LVA?
Left Ventricular Aneurysm (LVA) is a cardiovascular condition characterized by a localized outpouching or bulging of the left ventricle wall, typically following a myocardial infarction (heart attack). This occurs when the damaged heart muscle becomes thin and scarred, leading to a loss of contractile function and potential complications such as arrhythmias, thromboembolism, and heart failure. In India, LVA is a significant concern due to the high burden of ischemic heart disease and delayed access to primary care in rural areas. The condition is commonly diagnosed using echocardiography, cardiac MRI, or ventriculography, and management includes medical therapy with anticoagulants and antiarrhythmics, along with surgical interventions like aneurysmectomy or ventricular reconstruction. LVA is often encountered in cardiology wards and is a topic of importance for medical students preparing for NEET PG and other postgraduate entrance exams, as questions frequently focus on its pathophysiology, complications, and imaging findings. Understanding LVA is also critical for practicing physicians in India to improve early detection and reduce mortality rates.
