Leave Travel Allowance
Full Form of LTA
What is LTA?
Leave Travel Allowance (LTA) is a component of an employee's salary package in India, specifically designed to cover travel expenses incurred during leave. It is most commonly offered by government organizations and private companies as a tax-exempt allowance under Section 10(5) of the Income Tax Act, provided the employee actually undertakes a domestic journey within India. LTA can be claimed for travel by air, train, or any other recognized mode of public transport, and is typically applicable to travel within the country. Employees must submit travel proofs such as tickets and boarding passes to avail the benefit. For tax exemption, LTA can be claimed only for two journeys in a block of four calendar years. The allowance is widely used in corporate and government sectors to encourage employees to take breaks and explore India. In competitive exams like SSC, UPSC, and banking, questions related to LTA often appear under income tax or salary structure topics. Understanding LTA is crucial for HR professionals, tax filers, and students preparing for commerce or finance-related exams.
