Legal Services Network
Full Form of LSN
What is LSN?
The Legal Services Network (LSN) refers to a framework of legal aid mechanisms established under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 in India. It is designed to ensure that economically weaker sections, marginalized communities, and underprivileged individuals have access to free legal representation and advice. The network operates at national, state, and district levels through the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), State Legal Services Authorities (SLSAs), and District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs). LSN facilitates legal awareness camps, Lok Adalats (people's courts), mediation centers, and counseling services across the country. Citizens who are eligible—based on income, caste, or disability—can approach these authorities to file cases without paying court fees. The network also supports those in custodial care, such as prisoners and juvenile detainees, by appointing legal-aid lawyers for their defence. In rural and remote areas, LSN connects paralegal volunteers and law students to provide preliminary legal advice and document assistance. For competitive exams like the CLAT, judiciary services, and law entrance tests, understanding LSN and its role in promoting social justice is often a key topic in constitutional law and legal awareness sections. The system upholds the constitutional guarantee of equality before law enshrined in Article 39A of the Indian Constitution.
