Low Pressure Zone
Full Form of LPZ
What is LPZ?
A low pressure zone (LPZ) is a region in the atmosphere where the air pressure is significantly lower than that of the surrounding areas. This pressure difference causes air to rise, leading to cloud formation, precipitation, and often unsettled weather. In the Indian context, LPZs are critical to understanding the monsoon system—the seasonal low pressure over the Indian landmass draws in moist air from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, resulting in the heavy rains that define the monsoon. LPZs are also associated with cyclogenesis in the Bay of Bengal, where they can intensify into cyclonic storms. Meteorologists use satellite imagery and ground observations to track LPZs, issuing warnings for agriculture, fishing, and disaster management. This concept is frequently tested in Indian competitive exams such as UPSC, SSC, and state civil services, where questions on atmospheric pressure systems, monsoon mechanisms, and weather phenomena appear. Understanding LPZs helps students grasp broader topics in climatology, oceanography, and geography, making it a foundation for environmental science studies.
