License Plate Recognition
Full Form of LPR
What is LPR?
License Plate Recognition (LPR) is a technology that uses optical character recognition (OCR) to automatically read vehicle number plates from images captured by cameras. In India, LPR systems are deployed extensively at toll plazas under the FASTag ecosystem, where they capture plate numbers to match with vehicle registration data and deduct toll charges electronically. They are also used in traffic enforcement for detecting red-light violations, speeding, and identifying stolen vehicles. Smart city initiatives in cities like Bengaluru, Delhi, and Mumbai integrate LPR cameras at entry points to monitor traffic flow and manage parking. The technology relies on infrared or visible light cameras, often with AI-based image enhancement for accurate reading under varied lighting and weather conditions. LPR data is stored securely and used for analytics such as traffic pattern analysis and vehicle tracking. For exams like UPSC and state PSCs, understanding LPR as part of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) is important for questions on smart cities and e-governance. Additionally, LPR is a key component of the National Vehicle Registration Portal (VAHAN) integration. Despite its benefits, privacy concerns regarding continuous surveillance have been raised. Nonetheless, LPR continues to expand across Indian highways and urban roads, contributing to efficient traffic management and revenue collection.
