Lok Adalat
Full Form of LOK
What is LOK?
Lok Adalat, meaning 'People’s Court', is an alternative dispute resolution mechanism in India that provides informal, speedy, and cost-effective justice. It is a statutory forum established under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, operating under the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA). Lok Adalats are organized at regular intervals by legal service authorities at taluka, district, and state levels to settle pending and pre-litigation cases through conciliation and compromise. They handle civil, criminal, family, and revenue matters, among others, and their awards are final and binding on all parties, with no appeal allowed. This system reduces the burden on regular courts and promotes amicable settlements. In India, Lok Adalats are particularly significant for rural and marginalized communities who may lack access to formal legal structures. They are held in court premises, community halls, or temporary venues, often during special campaigns like ‘National Lok Adalat’ weeks. For law and judiciary exams such as CLAT or UPSC, understanding the role and functioning of Lok Adalat is crucial as it reflects India’s commitment to accessible justice.
