Liquid Nitrogen Quenching (LNQ) is a metallurgical heat treatment process that involves rapidly cooling a heated metal component by immersing it in liquid nitrogen at about -196°C. This extreme cooling rate transforms the metal's microstructure, typically producing a martensitic or bainitic phase that significantly enhances hardness and wear resistance while minimising distortion compared to conventional oil or water quenching. In India, LNQ is employed in high-precision industries such as automotive, aerospace, and defence for treating tool steels, gears, and bearing components. The process is particularly valued for cryogenic treatment of cutting tools and engine parts to extend service life. LNQ is widely studied in Indian engineering curricula, especially in metallurgy and mechanical engineering programmes, and appears in competitive exams like GATE under the topics of heat treatment and phase transformations.
