Lymph Node Dissection
Full Form of LND
What is LND?
Lymph Node Dissection (LND) is a surgical procedure wherein one or more lymph nodes are removed for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. In India, LND is commonly performed during cancer surgeries such as mastectomy, thyroidectomy, and pelvic exenterations to determine the extent of malignancy (staging) and to reduce the risk of metastasis. The procedure is critical in managing solid tumours, including breast, oral, and cervical cancers, which have high prevalence across Indian populations. LND is routinely conducted in tertiary care hospitals and cancer institutes, and its outcomes guide adjuvant therapies like chemotherapy or radiation. In Indian medical education, LND is a frequently tested topic in postgraduate entrance examinations such as NEET PG, AIIMS PG, and state-level surgery and oncology exams. Understanding the indications, techniques (e.g., sentinel lymph node biopsy versus comprehensive dissection), and complications such as lymphedema and nerve injury is essential for surgical trainees. The term is also used in oncology case discussions and tumour boards. Given India’s rising cancer burden and emphasis on early detection, LND remains a cornerstone of surgical oncology practice nationwide.
