What is LMO?
Liquid Medical Oxygen (LMO) refers to high-purity oxygen that is cooled to a liquid state at extremely low temperatures (around -183°C) for efficient storage and transportation. It is a critical medical gas used in hospitals and healthcare facilities for respiratory support, anesthesia, and intensive care. In India, LMO gained immense significance during the COVID-19 pandemic when there was an unprecedented surge in oxygen demand. The government coordinated railway tankers, airlifts, and dedicated production plants to supply LMO to affected regions. LMO is stored in cryogenic tanks at hospitals and refilled periodically by specialized tankers. Compared to gaseous oxygen cylinders, LMO offers higher density, allowing a larger volume of oxygen to be transported and stored, which is vital during emergencies. Key producers include steel plants and industrial gas companies that supply medical-grade oxygen after purification and certification. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) sets the specifications for medical oxygen purity. For competitive exams like NEET or UPSC, understanding LMO’s role in crisis management, public health infrastructure, and industrial-medical linkages is relevant. The pandemic highlighted the need for decentralized oxygen generation and better logistics, making LMO a core component of India’s healthcare preparedness.
