Low Level Waste
Full Form of LLW
What is LLW?
Low Level Waste (LLW) refers to radioactive waste that contains low concentrations of radionuclides, typically generated from nuclear power plants, hospitals, research facilities, and industrial applications. In India, LLW is primarily produced by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and other atomic energy establishments. The waste includes items like contaminated protective clothing, tools, filters, and laboratory materials that have been exposed to low levels of radiation. Unlike high-level waste, LLW does not require heavy shielding during handling and storage. India’s management of LLW follows strict guidelines set by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), with disposal often involving near-surface engineered facilities or controlled release after treatment. The waste is segregated, compacted, and immobilized in cement or bitumen to prevent environmental contamination. LLW is a key topic in environmental science and nuclear engineering curricula, and appears in competitive exams like UPSC, GATE, and NEET when discussing sustainable energy and waste management. Understanding LLW is crucial for students and professionals in radiological safety and environmental protection.
