Liquid Industrial Waste
Full Form of LIW
What is LIW?
Liquid Industrial Waste (LIW) refers to any liquid byproduct generated during industrial processes, including chemicals, oils, heavy metals, and organic compounds. In India, LIW is a major environmental concern due to rapid urbanization and industrial growth. It is commonly produced in sectors like pharmaceuticals, textiles, tanneries, and chemical manufacturing. LIW must be treated before discharge to prevent contamination of water bodies and soil. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and State Pollution Control Boards regulate its disposal under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974. Treatment methods include effluent treatment plants (ETPs), neutralization, and biological degradation. LIW is frequently discussed in environmental engineering and civil services exams, where questions on waste classification and treatment technologies appear. Proper management of LIW is crucial for sustainable development in India. Awareness and enforcement of standards help reduce health risks and ecological damage.
