What is LDV?

A Light Duty Vehicle (LDV) is a motor vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) up to 3.5 tonnes, designed for carrying passengers or light cargo. In India, LDVs include cars, SUVs, vans, pickup trucks, and minibuses. They are essential for personal mobility and small-scale logistics, especially in urban areas. LDVs are regulated under Bharat Stage (BS) emission standards, currently BS VI, which mandate advanced emission control systems. The term is widely used in automotive engineering, environmental policy, and transportation planning. Government schemes like FAME promote electric LDVs to reduce air pollution.
