Low Blood Volume
Full Form of LBV
What is LBV?
Low Blood Volume (LBV) is a medical condition characterised by a decrease in the total volume of blood circulating within the body, often referred to clinically as hypovolaemia. This condition can result from dehydration, haemorrhage, severe burns, or fluid loss due to illnesses such as diarrhoea and vomiting. In the Indian healthcare context, LBV is frequently encountered in emergency departments, rural clinics, and during seasonal outbreaks of gastroenteritis or dengue fever, where rapid fluid loss is common. It is assessed through vital signs like low blood pressure, increased heart rate, and reduced urine output. Management typically involves intravenous fluid replacement, blood transfusions, or oral rehydration solutions, and timely intervention is critical to prevent hypovolaemic shock. For medical students and nurses preparing for Indian exams such as AIIMS or NEET-PG, understanding the pathophysiology and management of LBV is essential, as case-based questions often appear. The term is widely used in patient reports, nursing charts, and clinical discussions across Indian hospitals, making it a fundamental concept in basic medical training.
