Livelihood Business Centre
Full Form of LBC
What is LBC?
A Livelihood Business Centre (LBC) is a resource hub established under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM) in India. It functions as a one-stop facility that provides business advisory, financial literacy, market linkages, and skill development support to rural entrepreneurs, particularly members of Self Help Groups (SHGs). The primary goal of an LBC is to promote sustainable livelihoods by bridging the gap between rural producers and formal markets. These centres are set up at the block or district level and are operated by trained Community Resource Persons. They assist in areas such as product branding, packaging, pricing, and compliance with quality standards. In the Indian context, LBCs play a critical role in poverty alleviation and women's empowerment, as they enable SHG members to transition from subsistence activities to viable small businesses. The concept was introduced as part of the government’s strategy to professionalize rural enterprise. For competitive exams like UPSC and state PSCs, understanding LBCs is important for questions related to rural development schemes and livelihood programmes. They represent a shift from purely social mobilization to economic strengthening of rural communities.
