What is KVP?
Kisan Vikas Patra (KVP) is a small savings scheme introduced by the Government of India, primarily aimed at encouraging savings among farmers and the general public. Launched originally in 1988 and relaunched in 2014 after a brief hiatus, the scheme is operated through post offices and authorized banks across the country. KVP offers a fixed interest rate, compounded annually, and doubles the invested amount in a predetermined period (currently around 124 months). There is no upper investment limit, making it accessible to a wide range of savers. The certificate can be issued in single or joint names, and can be transferred from one person to another. It is a safe, government-backed investment with moderate returns, often used for long-term financial planning. For government exam aspirants, KVP is frequently asked about in the context of Indian fiscal policy, small savings instruments, and banking awareness sections of competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and banking tests.
