Krishi Vigyan Kendra
Full Form of KVD
What is KVD?
Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) is a farm science centre established under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) to provide vocational training and technology dissemination to farmers, rural youth, and extension workers. Each KVK serves a specific district and acts as a hub for agricultural innovation, demonstration, and capacity building. The network of KVKs plays a vital role in bridging the gap between agricultural research and actual farming practices across India. KVKs conduct on-farm trials, frontline demonstrations, and need-based training programmes to promote sustainable agriculture, improved livelihoods, and food security. They also provide advisory services on crop management, livestock rearing, horticulture, and value addition. KVKs are typically located in rural areas and collaborate with local universities, NGOs, and government departments. For competitive exams like ICAR JRF, ASRB, and state agriculture services, knowledge of KVK structure and functions is often tested. The first KVK was established in 1974 in Tamil Nadu, and there are now over 700 KVKs across the country, making them a cornerstone of India's agricultural extension system. Their impact is especially visible in empowering small and marginal farmers through hands-on learning and access to modern techniques.
