Karnataka Urban Employment Scheme
Full Form of KUE
What is KUE?
The Karnataka Urban Employment Scheme (KUE) is a state government initiative designed to provide assured wage employment to urban residents across Karnataka. Launched by the state's Urban Development Department, the scheme aims to tackle urban unemployment and underemployment by offering up to 100 days of work per financial year to eligible adult members of urban households. Modeled on the lines of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), KUE focuses on creating productive assets in urban areas such as parks, roads, drainage systems, and sanitation facilities. The scheme is implemented through urban local bodies, including municipal corporations and town panchayats. It prioritizes women, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and other marginalized groups. The KUE scheme is significant for students of public policy, economics, and civil services examinations such as the KPSC and KAS, where questions on state-specific welfare schemes are common. It represents a shift towards social security in urban India and complements the national agenda of creating sustainable livelihoods. The scheme's effectiveness is evaluated based on the number of households provided employment and the quality of assets created.
