What is KQJ?

Kisan Qayam Jot (KQJ) is a flagship scheme launched by the Indian Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare to promote sustainable irrigation through solar-powered water pumps. The initiative aims to reduce dependence on grid electricity and diesel, cutting carbon emissions while ensuring reliable water supply for small and marginal farmers. Under KQJ, farmers receive substantial subsidies—up to 90% of the pump cost—to install off-grid solar units, especially in water-scarce regions like Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh. The scheme also provides maintenance training and connects beneficiaries with local renewable energy service companies. KQJ is rolled out through district-level agricultural offices and co-operative banks, and it is part of the larger National Solar Mission. Its use is particularly relevant during Rabi and Kharif seasons when groundwater demand peaks.
