Knowledge-Based Industry
Full Form of KBI
What is KBI?
Knowledge-Based Industry, commonly abbreviated as KBI, refers to a sector of the economy that relies heavily on intellectual capital, expertise, and innovation rather than raw materials or physical labour for its output. In India, KBIs encompass industries such as information technology, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, research and development, fintech, and educational services. These industries have become a cornerstone of India's economic growth, contributing significantly to GDP, generating large-scale employment for skilled professionals, and boosting exports. The Indian government has actively promoted KBIs through initiatives like Digital India, Startup India, and the establishment of technology parks and special economic zones across cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, and Chennai. KBI is widely discussed in policy documents, economic surveys, and corporate strategy frameworks. For students and professionals, the concept appears frequently in MBA curricula, UPSC, banking, and SSC examinations where questions on economic sectors and industry classification are asked regularly.
