Kavach Automatic Vehicle Protection System
Full Form of KAV
What is KAV?
KAV, often written as Kavach, is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system designed by the Indian Railways in collaboration with Indian research institutes. Kavach, meaning 'armour' in Hindi, is a safety technology that prevents train collisions and overspeeding by automatically applying brakes when the driver fails to respond to warnings. It uses radio frequency identification (RFID) tags, onboard computers, and wireless communication to continuously monitor train speed, signal status, and track occupancy. Deployed across high-density routes such as Delhi–Mumbai and Delhi–Howrah, Kavach enhances railway safety, reduces human error, and enables higher train frequency. The system was mandated by the Indian government after several major rail accidents. For competitive exams like RRB JE and SSC JE, Kavach is a frequently asked topic under railway technology and safety initiatives. Its successful implementation positions India among few nations with indigenous train protection systems, reducing reliance on foreign technologies like European Train Control System (ETCS).
