What is JYU?
Jai Yuva Unnati (JYU) is a flagship central government scheme launched by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in India. It aims to provide holistic skill development, entrepreneurship training, and employment linkages to youth aged 15–29 from rural and semi-urban areas. The program integrates digital literacy, financial inclusion, and soft skills with vocational training in high-demand sectors such as retail, IT-ITES, healthcare, and construction. JYU operates through a network of district-level skill centres and partnerships with industry bodies, ensuring that trainees receive market-relevant certifications. The scheme also includes a mentorship component where successful professionals guide participants through career planning and job placement. Since its rollout in 2022, JYU has registered over 2.5 million beneficiaries, with a special focus on women and differently-abled youth. It is frequently referenced in public policy discussions, competitive exam syllabi (e.g., UPSC, SSC), and government social media campaigns. Understanding JYU is essential for candidates appearing for exams like UPSC Civil Services because it appears under the ‘Government Schemes’ section of the General Studies paper.
