JPEG Extended Range
Full Form of JXR
What is JXR?
JPEG XR (JPEG Extended Range) is an image compression standard developed by Microsoft that offers high dynamic range (HDR) support, lossless compression, and efficient encoding for digital images. Originally known as HD Photo, it was standardized as JPEG XR (ISO/IEC 29199-2) in 2009. In India, JPEG XR is used in professional photography, medical imaging, and digital archiving where retaining image quality across a wide luminance range is critical. It is also supported in Windows operating systems and some web browsers, though its adoption is less widespread than JPEG or PNG. For Indian students pursuing degrees in computer science, information technology, or multimedia, understanding JPEG XR is relevant for courses on image processing, compression algorithms, and digital media formats. The format enables smaller file sizes without compromising quality, making it useful for bandwidth-constrained environments. Its ability to handle HDR images makes it popular among advanced photographers and designers. However, due to limited browser support, it is not as common in web applications. Knowledge of JPEG XR can appear in GATE or university exams on data compression and image coding standards.
