Junior Vocational Qualification
Full Form of JVQ
What is JVQ?
Junior Vocational Qualification (JVQ) is a skill-based certification offered in India as part of the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF). It is designed for students who have completed Class 10 and wish to pursue vocational training in trades such as electrician, plumbing, tailoring, hospitality, or information technology. JVQ is typically provided through schools that have integrated vocational streams under the Ministry of Human Resource Development (now Ministry of Education) and in collaboration with sector skill councils. The qualification focuses on imparting hands-on skills, workplace readiness, and theoretical knowledge, enabling students to either seek employment directly or proceed to higher vocational courses like Advanced Vocational Qualification or Diploma in Vocational Education. JVQ is used across state-run and private schools, particularly in states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu, as part of the government's push to bridge the skill gap and reduce dropout rates. While not directly an exam, JVQ programs often include formative and summative assessments by bodies like the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) or state boards. For students aiming for early employment or self-employment, JVQ offers a credible alternative to traditional academic paths. Its relevance in competitive exams is limited, but it is valued for job-oriented roles in the organised and unorganised sectors.
