Jan Shikshan Sansthan
Full Form of JSS
What is JSS?
Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS) is a network of adult education centres across India, established under the Ministry of Education (formerly Ministry of Human Resource Development). It was originally launched in 1967 as part of the National Adult Education Programme and later revitalised under the National Literacy Mission. JSS aims to provide functional literacy, vocational training, and skill development to non-literate, neo-literate, and school-dropout individuals, particularly those from disadvantaged sections of society in rural and urban areas. Each JSS centre offers courses in areas such as tailoring, embroidery, computer applications, beauty culture, electrical repairs, and health awareness. The programme also emphasises women's empowerment and includes components on legal literacy, sanitation, and family welfare. JSS centres are managed by registered voluntary organisations and receive financial support from the government. They play a pivotal role in India's adult education ecosystem by bridging the gap between basic literacy and livelihood enhancement. For competitive exams like UPSC, state PSCs, and teaching eligibility tests, knowledge of JSS and its objectives is often tested under the topics of social sector, education policy, and government schemes. The scheme currently operates under the Directorate of Adult Education, Ministry of Education.
